“What’s with the boardshorts over the wetsuit?”
This is a question us inland stand up paddlers hear all the time, primarily from the surfing community. We feel naked without our boardshorts on and feel like a dweeb without them as much as many think we look like wearing them. The reasons are simple…
Reason #1: Our asses meet a lot of rocks when paddling in the river, the boardshorts help protect the wetsuit.
Reason #2: Style. The river rarely ever gets “warm”. Bikinis aren’t really a thing when paddling class III rapids. The shorts are what allows us to add a little bit of “flare” to our heavily geared get up.
Reason #3: Pockets and the safety aspect of bright colors.
Different paddling backgrounds and cultures encourages an onset of different styles. We are a world full of diversity, embrace it!
Recently I saw comments on a friends video criticizing the boardshorts over his wetsuit. There was a complete disregard of what sort of physical danger he put himself in to surf this particular wave. It shouldn’t have upset me but it did. Who cares about what someones wearing, pay attention to the incredible human being and show them some love for being such!
My name is Brittany Parker and I wear board shorts over my wetsuit.
